The
Minnesota Hosta Society (MHS) is a non-profit educational
society
established in 1991 to promote knowledge of, and interest
in the landscape
plant, hosta. We have educational meetings throughout the
year, offer many
activities for members, and participate in several community
events in the
Twin Cities area.
Currently, over 550
people from across the country are members of the
society. Our members range from beginning gardeners just
becoming
acquainted with hostas to experienced growers and hybridizers.
Benefits of membership in the MHS include the following:
• The Hosta dig, a plant sale held at the Arboretum
each May where
members can purchase Hostas at good prices.
• Three educational meetings with both local and nationally
recognized
speakers.
• The MHS publicizes the Hostaphile newsletter four
times per year,
with members sharing gardening, growing tips and ideas,
propagation
techniques, and general shade gardening information.
• The society sponsors a summer garden tour of fabulous
local gardens,
which includes lunch and an annual sale and auction of
hosta plants.
Members register for this event early, as it has the
reputation as one of
the best garden tours available in the area. There is
a registration fee
for this event.
• The MHS also offers members two newer hosta varieties
each year at
reduced prices.
• An annual holiday dinner celebration. There is a
registration fee for
this event.
Other activities
include sponsorship of a hosta leaf show and participation
in
other community gardening events. One community event
is the Arboretum
Plant Fair that is held each spring; the MHS staffs a
booth with information
about our organization and growing and caring for hostas.
We end each year
with a holiday party, where members gather to celebrate
the holidays and talk with other hosta friends.
Dues are $10 for
2 years. Gift memberships are available.
